The clearing is an area around the dark forest which Link went to when looking for the Artifact with Steven Bauer and Coconut.
After killing Steven and finding the Artifact, he and Coconut ended up getting lost there and Link was eventually murdered by the Darkness. Later, Mario showed up there and found a dying Link.
